Your perfect summer motorhome adventure

New Zealand summer brings long, sunny days and landscapes that change quickly from beaches to mountains within just a short drive. Even though the country looks small on a map, there's no shortage of places to go or things to see. The good news is that with the right planning and a flexible itinerary, it’s easy to enjoy the country like a pro. That’s where we come in. We can help you with the practical details of a Kiwi summer, while highlighting what really matters and making sure your get the most out of your trip.

Quick facts about summer in New Zealand

Here's some quick things to know about the hottest and busiest time in New Zealand:

  • Summer lasts from December to February, but the hottest time of year is usually in late January, early February.
  • The summer months are the busiest in New Zealand, so there can be a lot of traffic in popular areas. Travel early or in the evening to avoid peak times.
  • There are often roadworks or road closures during summer, so make sure to check the NZ Trasport Agency website before you travel.
  • If you’re planning on travelling between the North and South Islands, you’ll need to book a ferry. Spots can go fast, so make sure you sort this well in advance.

Essential items for a New Zealand summer

Packing for New Zealand is simple if you know one key thing. The weather can change very fast. One minute it’s sunny and hot, and the next there’s wind and rainfall all in one single day. Keep in mind, sunlight hits harder than you’d think, so it's wise to come prepared.

Here are a few essential things I never leave my accommodation without:

  • Good Sunscreen: Use high SPF sunscreen and apply it every single morning. Even driving in New Zealand during cloudy weather can cause sunburn. Make sure you really focus on the often forgotten spots–like the ears, neck, and backs of the hands.
  • Layered Clothing: Being flexible matters. If you’re going to be away from your vehicle for most of the day, having a sweater and thin rainproof jacket on hand means you can quickly layer up if you need to. You can easily remove layers when the sun comes out.
  • Swimsuits: Keep it on top of your day bag. The truth is, an unexpected swim can pop up at any time thanks to the hidden lakes, cool rivers and peaceful beaches dotted throughout New Zealand. Having it ready means you can take a quick dip whenever you find the perfect spot.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: This is a handy trick when travelling around New Zealand. The tap water is safe to drink, no matter where you go. So, you stay hydrated throughout the day while cutting down on single use plastics. Also, it is a great way to save money!

Where to go in New Zealand

Here is a simple overview of what you can enjoy in some famous places to start your summer journey!

Auckland: The coastal city

Starting a motorhome road trip in Auckland puts you right in New Zealand’s biggest city. It sits right between two big harbours, so chances are you’ll find yourself doing something related to water during your trip. Sure, summer days can get sticky. But a cool ocean breeze often rolls in to save the day.

  • Head over to Waiheke Island:  Book a trip on the Sea Link Ferry, which allows campervans up to 8 metres. Sip local wine at a small winery. Enjoy lunch with gorgeous vineyard views. Then, unwind on calm beaches like Oneroa. The vibe is so easygoing you might want to stay for your whole trip, it’s that easy to lose all track of time.
  • Visit the West Coast Beaches: Need a change of scene? Drive to the wild West Coast. In under an hour, you can reach stunning black sand beaches such as Piha and Muriwai. It is a surfer's paradise, but often too rough for a swim. Better to visit for the stunning views and many walkways instead. Walk on the sand, see skilled surfers and sense the strong force of the Tasman Sea.
  • My suggestion: Walk up to Mount Eden. It is a dormant volcano in the middle of city. From the top, you can see all around Auckland and its two harbours in a full circle. It is a good way to understand where things are and enjoy the special landscape of the city.

In Auckland, you can pick up a campervan from several rental companies around the city, or from the Airport.

Rows of lush green grapevines stretch across a sunlit vineyard on Waiheke Island, New Zealand, surrounded by rolling hills and trees under a warm golden sky.
Take a water taxi to a secluded bay. Paddle a kayak along the coast. Or hike a piece of the seaside trail.

Nelson: The sunny and arts focused region

If you like sunshine, starting your trip in Nelson is a great idea. This area gets more sun than any other place in New Zealand. In addition to the good weather and flawless beaches, there are many local art and craft displays in galleries and studios all around the region.

  • Head to nearby shores: Just outside town, Tahunanui Beach rolls out a wide stretch of soft sand that is ideal for kids and grownups alike. You’ll find loads of spots to swim, shape sandy castles, or simply wander close to the water.
  • Accessing Abel Tasman National Park: This national park is a coastal paradise. Imagine the most gorgeous white sand beaches. They are surrounded by crystal-clear, blue water where you can explore it all. Take a water taxi to a secluded bay. Paddle a kayak along the coast. Or hike a piece of the seaside trail. Motorhome camping is available at Totaranui Campground, about two and a half hours from Nelson. Keep in mind it’s essential to prepare before any walk or hike in New Zealand.
  • My suggestion: You should not miss Nelson Market on a Saturday morning. It is a lively place where you can get fresh fruits from local farmers, try different local foods, and look at handmade items by artists.

When you book a campervan rental in Nelson, you’ll arrange a pickup point with the rental company ahead of time, which makes it convenient for any trip.

Christchurch: A city of parks and gardens

Christchurch gets the balance just right. You can enjoy city life and nature with ease. Getting around is super simple on foot or by bike because of the city’s famously flat shape. Plus, the dazzling natural sights are just a quick drive away.

  • Glide along on a Punt Ride: For an utterly peaceful experience, a punt ride on the Avon is a must. You will glide in a traditional flat-bottomed punt and pass the city’s beautiful Botanic Gardens. This is a lovely local tradition and a great way to relax for an hour.
  • Visit Banks Peninsula: The drive to the Bank Peninsula is stunning and drops you into the historic Akaroa. This charming harbour town has an interesting French history which is visible in the style of the streets and houses. It's also a very good place to go on wildlife cruises to see the rare Hector's dolphin, which you can only see in New Zealand.
  • My suggestion: Hit up Riverside Market between Cashel and Litchfield Streets. This bustling attraction features some of the best food perveyors in Christchurch, as well as artisan goods and beer from local breweries. Parking can be difficult, so make sure to factor this into your plan.

Christchurch has campervan pick up locations in the city and from the Airport. There are over 20 rental companies you can compare and choose from.

Queenstown: The scenic adventure hub

A motorhome trip in Queenstown places you closely to stunning sights. Although the area has many adventure sports available, you don't have to participate to enjoy your visit here. The scenery is already great and has lots of ways to enjoy your trip

  • Check out Lake Wakatipu: This huge stretch of water sits right at the heart of Queenstown. To catch some beautiful sights while chilling out, hop on a boat tour. Or instead, go kayaking or stand-up paddling at sunrise. The water tends to stay still during those hours that makes it perfect for spotting the mountains mirrored in the glassy surface.
  • The drive to Glenorchy: Got room for just one amazing ride? Make this the one. Just about 45 minutes’ drive from Queenstown, the route sticks close to the lakeshore all along the way. You will see beautiful scenery with high mountains coming up from blue water. It's a trip that many visitors recall as one of the best parts of their travel.
  • My suggestion: Walk the Queenstown Hill Track. It is a steady climb that can only take you a few hours, but the view from top is worth every step. You can see the whole lake and the sharp peaks of Remarkables mountain range very clearly.

Most of the campervan rental companies in Queenstown have location near the Airport, which is about a 15-minute drive from downtown.

Off the beaten path

While you’ll be having a trip you’ll never forget by going to any of the above locations, there are so many more places to visit and things to see in New Zealand. Some that take a little bit of extra effort, but are worth your time include Gisborne, on the east coast of the North Island. It’s officially the first city to see the sun rise each day and has an embarrassment of beaches to enjoy. Or you can head to the ends of the Earth and travel to Invercargill and Bluff, famous for oysters and rugged wilderness. And there’s always the opposite end of the country, where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean at Cape Reinga. It’s a great way to pair the best weather New Zealand has to offer with the best scenery it has to offer.

Planning your trip

Getting a campervan rental from Motorhome Republic is honestly the easiest way to see the different sides of New Zealand. You can put together your own perfect mix of city life, beach time and mountain views, all on your own schedule.
